Earthen architecture is one of the oldest and most widespread forms of built heritage in the world. Long considered a marginal field of study, archaeological research on earthen architecture is now essential for preserving fragile sites exposed to both natural and human-induced deterioration.
In this context, CRAterre and Les Grands Ateliers are launching the training course “Identifying and Conserving Earthen Architecture on Archaeological Sites”. This program is intended for heritage and archaeology professionals wishing to deepen their knowledge of earthen architecture and the challenges related to its conservation. The course will take place from June 29 to July 3 in Villefontaine & Saint-Chef (Isère, France).

PROGRAMME
Identifying archaeological remains in earth: acquire a foundational understanding of the history of earthen architecture around the world; learn about the main earthen construction techniques and develop the ability to identify them through observation and excavation of archaeological remains.
Assessing material properties: master common field and laboratory testing methods; produce material samples to compare their resistance and make informed choices according to available resources.
Implementing conservation strategies: understand the basics of site diagnosis; design conservation projects adapted to available technical, financial, and human resources; learn about the different intervention options suitable for earthen materials; document the conservation work carried out.
Enhancing archaeological sites: develop a collaborative strategy for public access; explore different on-site enhancement options (visitor pathways, signage, public activities, museums, etc.); promote the site through scientific outreach, communication materials, and dissemination across various media.
Hands-on field practice: carry out site diagnosis; prepare surfaces for treatment; implement common conservation techniques; reduce deterioration factors at the scale of the site.
