Aims of the qualification
The course offers a comprehensive overview of earthen construction, combining local building traditions with contemporary innovations. It is aimed at professionals wishing to deepen their knowledge of earthen building techniques and systems.
Programme
The programme comprises three online theoretical modules (earth architecture around the world, earth construction techniques and systems, contemporary perspectives), a face-to-face practical module and a virtual module dedicated to the project study.
Skills developed during the course
- You will learn to recognize and interpret the various characteristics of earth as a building material.
- You will gain an understanding of the behavior of granular materials—specifically earth—to foster process innovation and experimentation with construction systems.
- You will discover the composition and behavior of some of the most widely used earth construction systems today.
- You will be able to identify the criteria and elements involved in constructing rammed earth, adobe, wattle and daub, light straw-clay, and cast earth walls.
- You will develop a critical perspective on the possibilities and challenges associated with earth construction in the current context.
- You will develop technical and creative skills for working with natural materials that connect us to the earth.
- You will become familiar with contemporary trends in technological innovation regarding the use of earth in construction.
