Objectives

This project is part of a global program aimed at reducing the vulnerability of populations in West and Central Africa by improving their housing in the face of flood-related risks, using existing local know-how.

The aim was to put in place the content, programming and human resources needed to train 400 craftsmen to help rebuild the homes of over 7,000 families affected by the floods of September 1, 2009 in Ouagadougou, Burkina-Faso. Emphasis was to be placed on better protection of the base walls of the homes to be built.

Results

  • Training of trainers: CRAterre's mission was to train a team of technicians capable of supervising future training courses.
  • 400 artisans trained by the trainers
  • A neighborhood of several hundred houses rebuilt by craftsmen trained under the project.

Project realization

  • Development of an educational kit on best practices in earthen construction (adobe), with particular reference to foundations and bedrock.
