A first set of soil analysis equipment was installed in Bam in 2004, shortly after the earthquake that partly destroyed the modern city and the citadel, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Little by little, the laboratory was enriched with new equipment, in line with the expectations of the technicians in charge of conserving the damaged citadel. Improvements in the quality of the materials used for conservation were soon apparent, thanks in particular to specific training modules for the laboratory managers, which fostered fruitful exchanges between "the laboratory" and "production", and the development of suitable research protocols and quality control tools.
