AfriCAP 2016 is a three-year action financed by the European Union as part of the ACPCultures+ program. AfriCAP2016 aims to strengthen synergies and operational capacities among decision-makers and cultural heritage professionals in French-speaking Africa, in order to consolidate the contribution of heritage to development.

Africa has a rich cultural heritage, yet little is being done to build development on this potential. The AfriCAP2016 program addresses the key question of what tools need to be developed to make the most of this heritage:

  • management and development of real estate, movable and intangible assets;
  • capacity building for project owners and contractors;
  • networking players.

Focus areas
AfriCAP2016 (2014-2016) focuses on 3 areas:

  • Axis 1: Three projects demonstrating the contribution of heritage to development
  • Axis 2: Strengthening the operational capacities of decision-makers and players in the field of cultural heritage
  • Axis 3: Synergies and networking between cultural heritage decision-makers and professionals

Structure
AfriCAP2016 is structured around three heritage projects in cities in three French-speaking African countries: Nikki in Benin, Grand-Bassam in Côte d'Ivoire and Télimélé in Guinea. Their implementation will raise awareness among decision-makers and local populations of the many ways in which heritage can contribute to territorial development. These projects will also serve as training platforms, bringing together decision-makers and cultural heritage players in French-speaking Africa to deepen and exchange knowledge on various complementary aspects of heritage management: cultural policies, protection systems, conservation practices, enhancement strategies, tourism promotion, museum activities, etc.
