Objectives

The Rectorat de Mayotte, which is responsible for the department's public schools, is keen to meet the growing need for secondary school places, and has launched a project to rebuild and extend the Lycée de Chirongui.

In addition to classrooms, this major project, designed to accommodate 2,000 secondary school students, also includes sports facilities, a school restaurant with kitchen and a boarding school. The seamless integration of these different functions creates an inspiring space in which to work, eat, sleep and relax. The school blends in with the island's culture and nature, using local materials such as bamboo, wood, raw earth and basalt.

Raw earth, wood, bamboo and basalt - all natural materials that abound on the island and underline the close link between the school and its environment, between nature and architecture. The bamboo facades are reminiscent of the woven fences found in the homes of the island's inhabitants. The overhanging roofs and long corridors lining the classrooms are inspired by traditional verandas and dwellings.

On the gables of the gymnasium and the lycée, the lime rendering echoes the name of the lycée, Tani Malandi, the name given to the white clay that comes from the surrounding caves and is used for make-up during wedding ceremonies and traditional rituals.
