Objectives

In response to the demographic growth in the Seine-et-Marne region, the Ile-de-France Region appointed COSA - Colboc Sachet Architecture to design the extension and renovation of the Henri-Becquerel secondary school in Nangis. Built in 1991, this building could initially accommodate up to 500 pupils. This restructuring project will enable the school to increase its capacity from 700 to 1,200 pupils. The new building will house the new half-board, 1,600 m² of additional teaching space and 990 m² of school life and administration space.

CRAterre was commissioned by the Ile de France Region to help integrate raw earth into this extension project. The load-bearing timber-framed building will feature 600m² of interior masonry made of extruded bricks produced from quarry soil (De Wulf brickworks) and 1,300m² of exterior masonry made of compressed and stabilised raw earth bricks produced from excavation spoil (BC Materials). This project has been technically validated by an Experimental Technical Approval (ATEx) issued by the CSTB, which is currently in progress. In November 2024, CRAterre also trained the contractor in the installation of raw earth masonry.
