The City of Yerevan is committed to developing sustainable tourism based on the enhancement of its heritage. To this end, it has worked with its partners on a number of preliminary actions to develop the city's heritage tourism.

In 2017, the Yerevan City Council requested technical and financial support from the AIMF, to implement the project entitled "Conservation, restoration and enhancement of the Yerebuni archaeological site, to boost tourism in Yerevan and Armenia".

The project was developed in partnership with the city of Yerevan, the Erébouni National Museum and the NGO CRAterre. The project was also supported by the City of Geneva, through its framework agreement with the AIMF.

This approach converged with the anniversary of the city's foundation: the 2800th anniversary of Erébouni, which Yerevan celebrated in 2018 by organizing an event on the citadel's archaeological site and museum. The City Council, along with numerous partners, was determined to commemorate this symbolic date in style by launching a project to conserve and enhance the Erébouni site, as well as to promote and diversify its tourist offering. As a "velvet revolution" took place in Armenia in May 2018, the town hall's plans and the implementation of the project ran into difficulties. However, in line with the work program, training courses were carried out and animations and workshops were presented at the XVII Francophonie Summit, held in Armenia in October 2018.
