Objectives

We are working with IOM in Somalia to enable the transition from emergency and transitional shelters (usually tents or wooden frames with plastic covers) to more comfortable and durable shelters made from local materials. This is relevant because the displacement of people affected by crises tends to be long-term, and emergency solutions are losing their relevance. It is also relevant because contextual approaches are being developed to reduce the environmental impact of shelter responses and increase the relevance of solutions at a socio-economic and cultural level. CRAterre contributed its expertise at various levels. Participatory habitat analysis work was carried out in Doolow, Baidoa and Bosaso. Training missions (adobe production and construction) took place in the field in Mogadishu and then in Doolow and Baidoa. Remote technical assistance was provided throughout the mission, in particular to monitor the construction of various prototypes and demonstration buildings in the two towns.
Support for scaling up the project in the two towns (Doolow and Baidoa) is continuing, in addition to support for strengthening sustainable solutions thinking among all the Somalia Cluster partners and support for training trainers and supervisors.
