Objectives
AL'MA is a subsidiary of the Action Logement Group, dedicated to the creation of affordable housing in Mayotte, with the aim of meeting the needs of employees, businesses and the local area to support economic development.
As part of an eco-neighbourhood project in Chiconi, AL'MA launched a Call for Expressions of Interest (AMI) aimed at developing demonstrator prototypes incorporating the employment/housing link, the adaptability of housing, and taking into account the sociology of housing in Mayotte.
Art.terre Mayotte, ETPO, CRAterre and GRZ, the winners of this call for proposals, were awarded a 200m² plot to build a duplex T6 dwelling using a local material and sector: compressed earth bricks (BTC).
The proposed prototype had to be designed to meet the specific needs of the inhabitants of Mayotte, in particular by allowing flexible layouts that take into account family composition and professional activities. For example, a dwelling could easily be transformed to accommodate a large family or include a space dedicated to local micro-entrepreneurs, such as shopkeepers or craftsmen.
In keeping with the local climate, the homes had to be walk-through and include a veranda, which is an essential living space serving as a social link and transition between indoors and outdoors, in harmony with the Mahoran way of life.
