Objectives
The old town of Agadez, nestling in the north of Niger, has been renowned for centuries for its mastery of earthen construction. However, despite its splendour, this historic city is today facing pressing challenges that threaten its heritage. The gradual deterioration of ancient structures illustrates the multiple challenges facing Agadez, such as climate change, demographic growth and socio-economic transformations. The shortage of skilled labour, difficult access to quality local materials and declining interest among young people in traditional trades are all obstacles to be overcome. The transmission of ancestral knowledge is becoming rarer, jeopardising the survival of this exceptional heritage.
Faced with these threats, preservation initiatives have emerged, supported by local players, the authorities and international organisations. Among them, the Imane Atarikh association stands out for its commitment to passing on traditional knowledge and preserving cultural heritage. Since 2020, the ALIPH foundation has been supporting this association in its efforts. CRAterre's role is to strengthen Imane Atarikh's capacities in terms of documentation and capitalising on the technical lessons learnt over the course of its projects.
