Objectives
The project to restore the Tomb of Askia, funded by the ALIPH Foundation and managed by Mali's National Directorate for Cultural Heritage, is receiving technical assistance from CRAterre. Initially planned for the period 2020-2022, it has been extended to 2025 due to various constraints, notably health (Covid) and security. The project comprises a series of actions, developed in consultation with the management committee and stakeholders, aimed at cleaning up the site.
Over time, structural deformation, surface erosion and the haphazard installation of electrical equipment have altered the integrity and authenticity of the monument. In order to prevent any further deterioration and to make the most of traditional local know-how, a complete restoration project is currently underway. The main objective is to enhance the conservation of the site while preserving its authenticity, in particular by maintaining traditional maintenance practices.
