Following the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010, post-disaster analysis showed that traditional buildings had held up much better than more recent concrete constructions. Based on a field diagnosis and an analysis of the available literature, REparH has helped to develop sustainable technical and architectural solutions with the project's partner operators in the field.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Le projet REparH s\u2019est inscrit dans la situation post-s\u00e9isme du 12 janvier 2010 en Ha\u00efti.\u00a0L\u2019analyse de la catastrophe a montr\u00e9 que les constructions traditionnelles en ossature\u00a0bois \u2013 d\u00e9laiss\u00e9es depuis le d\u00e9but de la deuxi\u00e8me moiti\u00e9 du XXe si\u00e8cle \u2013 avaient beaucoup\u00a0mieux r\u00e9sist\u00e9 au s\u00e9isme que les constructions r\u00e9centes en b\u00e9ton, pratique constructive en\u00a0pleine expansion \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle du pays. Celle-ci, devenue la r\u00e8gle en zones urbaines, a \u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0un facteur aggravant de la catastrophe du fait de la mauvaise qualit\u00e9 des constructions,\u00a0beaucoup recherchant \u00e0 travers le b\u00e9ton un statut social sans pouvoir avoir acc\u00e8s aux\u00a0savoirs, comp\u00e9tences techniques et mat\u00e9riaux de qualit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, REparH has sought to combine a transdisciplinary scientific approach with field realities and projects to develop a project methodology and quality architectural responses based on socially adapted and scientifically relevant constructive solutions, taking into account local uses and practices through the valorization of constructive cultures. Based on a field diagnosis and analysis of available literature, sustainable technical, economic, social and architectural solutions have been developed with the project's partner operators in the field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Parasinistre and beyond<\/h1>\n

The cross-braced wood-frame construction system, improved as part of the project, has been validated by the Ministry in charge of reconstruction (MTPTC). In this way, ReparH has reduced the vulnerability of buildings to major risks (earthquake, cyclone) and improved community resilience. It has also contributed to the establishment of a genuine professional sector organized around the association of trained craftsmen.<\/p>\n

More than 2,000 families have benefited directly from the research carried out, obtaining a new home or having their house repaired. By the end of 2015, more than 2,000 other families had benefited indirectly through training for site managers and professionals, as well as the dissemination of technical information relating to the constructive system used. By the end of 2016, this trend will continue with several thousand additional constructions.<\/p>\n

The first school infrastructure projects were built using the same constructive principles. Today, the building system is used by other organizations, both local and international (UN-Habitat, IFRC, IOM, etc.).<\/p>\n

In 2016, the buildings successfully withstood the test of Hurricane Matthew. The \"Local Constructive Cultures\" methodology developed during REparH is now being adopted by national authorities and major institutions and organizations in charge of risk prevention and management. Finally, the project gave rise to two doctoral theses (in architecture and engineering), several articles, the production of an exhibition and a publication summarizing the results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
