Objectives
According to the HNRP (Humanitarian Needs Response Plan) 2024, around 4.6 million people need assistance with shelter and non-food items in Somalia. Needs vary according to the different categories of displaced people, whether recently displaced or those who have been displaced for a long time. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) shelter cluster team focuses on providing emergency assistance to people newly displaced by conflict, eviction and natural disasters. The IOM supports these people by focusing on sustainable temporary shelter solutions and affordable, adaptable housing, using materials adapted to Somalia, such as adobes.
As part of this project, IOM and CRAterre focused their efforts on providing sustainable, cost-effective shelter while reducing environmental impact and building community resilience. This was achieved through training programmes, environmental assessments and the promotion of sustainable construction techniques, in particular the use of adobe bricks.
Results
- Technical skills strengthened through ongoing training programmes;
- Improved qualitative knowledge of local housing in different locations;
- Collection of technical and social data on the impact of different housing solutions on the environment and people's lives;
- Identifying usable recommendations for the Climate Resilience Hub construction project and other projects.
